For accommodation, transport, food, activities and more
I went to Songkhla, a city in southern Thailand, for 4 days 3 nights in mid July! Below is a breakdown of my spending according to the various categories. (Exchange rate used: 1 SGD = 26.5 THB)
Pre-trip expenses
Flights
Travel Insurance
Internet / SIM card
Note: This time, I decided to get a tourist SIM card before I flew for more convenience. I didn’t want to worry about having internet connection after touching down in foreign land. And luckily, despite my almost last-minute order on 14 July, the SIM card was delivered to me by 17 July, just a day before my flight 🤣
Accommodation
Note: I stayed in the only hostel within Songkhla Old Town. Surprisingly, the rate was almost twice more than in Chiangmai and Phuket. I recall paying close to just $10 SGD per night in those regions. However, I last stayed there in Dec 2022, so prices may have increased due to inflation. Accommodations were booked via Agoda.
Food, Transport and Miscellaneous
Note: While dining in Songkhla Old Town, I found it amusing that I would spend more on drinks and dessert than my main meals 🤣 For instance, I would spend 40 – 50 THB on a bowl of congee. Then while exploring cafes, I would buy coffee which costs around 65 – 80 THB. I even tried Matcha panna cotta for 95 THB haha. That said, “non-barista” coffee sold by most street stalls are much cheaper at around 15 THB.
Note: On the last day, I hailed a taxi ride back to Hat Yai airport from within Hat Yai City. I paid for the ride using my Trust debit card, and the exchange rates by Trust were really competitive at 1 SGD = 26.8 THB! If you are keen on signing up for a Trust card, here’s my referral code: YBM7N79G

Summary of Trip Expenses
Ending Note
The last time I went to Thailand was for my graduation trip in December 2022, before I commenced my full-time work. Back then, as I was travelling for a longer period of time (3 weeks), and I was using my limited savings to fund the trip, I was very budget conscious. Be it food, accommodation or transport, I constantly made an effort to go for the reasonably cheapest option. Read here to find out my expenses for that trip.
As for this trip, while I was still closer to a budget traveler than a luxury one, I was happy that I was able and willing to try not just food from street stalls, and utilise transport options other than public transport available.
That said, the cost of living in Singapore is much higher than in Thailand, which makes it a really budget-friendly travel destination for fellow Singaporeans!
Thank you for reading! Happy travels!
